The bronze casting guild is as old as the Benin Kingdom. Primarily the guild was put together for the beautification of the palace they are under the instruction of the monarch. The bronze casting is hereditary the art is learnt from an early age of 6 years. The bronze casting guild center is open for basic learning, research and sales of the products
In 1280 AD Oba Ozuola gave the Bronze Casters the right to produce bronze works for the general public so they can earn money to cater for their family. Originally there were over a hundred guilds in the palace but at present only a few are existing (wood carvers , Ikpema, metal works and the bronze casting guilds) others have gone into extinction
Igun is one family, it’s a guild with a craft, it’s not industrial or a machine production. A product can take time to produce (1-3 months) because its handmade and the artist are meticulous
